Anna E. (Jones) Brooks

Woolford

Anna Elizabeth Jones Brooks, 105, of Woolford passed away on Monday, February 6, 2023 at Talbot Hospice in Easton. She was born in Cambridge on January 16, 1918 and was a daughter of the late Grace Olivia Weedon Jones and David Harmon Jones.

She graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1935.  She worked as a cashier for Woolworth 5 & 10, later at P. Frankel Dress Shop and Hearn Hardware Company. On February 7, 1941 she married J. William (Wee) Brooks who passed away on December 28, 1981. In November of 1946 they moved to Woolford, MD. In 1955 at the death of her father in law Claude Brooks, they took over the operations of the Woolford Store, then known as Brooks Country Store. She was also the clerk in the Post Office which was located in the front corner of the store. In 1963, she became the Post Master of Woolford until she retired in October of 1982.

She was a member of Milton Church since 1949, held positions of treasurer of the church for 30 years, secretary of Sunday school for 22 years and taught teen class which is now the Women’s Bible Class. With the help of Ruth Moore and Bill Asplen they started the Youth MYF which lasted until the kids went off to college or work and with the help of Rev. Jameson we started Vacation Bible School which was very successful. Later, started the fall Bazar to raise money for the Parsonage up keep. She was the president of United Methodist Women’s organization. Mrs. Brooks was president of Woolford Church Creek Homemakers Society, past president of the Eastern Shore Hospital Auxiliary-volunteer for 30 years, charter member of the Church Creek Volunteer Fire Company and past president, Monday Blues, South Dorchester Folk Museum, Cambridge AARP, and the Cambridge YMCA.

Mrs. Brooks loved to travel, doing crafts and reading. She also enjoyed going to lunch with her friends.

She is survived by a daughter Sandra Sharpe and husband Bill, granddaughter Tammi Sharpe and husband Tod McChesney, grandson Jonathan Sharpe and wife Tracy, two great grandchildren Isabella and Cadin, three sister in laws and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Brooks is preceded in death by a daughter Judith Ann Brooks and six sisters and five brothers.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2023 at 11 am at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. with Rev. Ben Allen officiating. Interment will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Milton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 106, Woolford, MD 21677 or to the Church Creek Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 16, Church Creek, MD 21622.
