Burtis M. Tyler, 90, of Cambridge passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was born in Fishing Creek on March 7, 1922 and was a son of the late S. Goldie Tyler and Alma Aaron Tyler.
He attended Cambridge High School. Mr. Tyler served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 740th Tank Battalion. On February 2, 1944 he married the former Audrey Mallory who passed away on July 20, 2008. In 1970, he went to the Bible Institute in Greenville, SC. He worked for Perdue and later for Golden Pride where he was the head of trucking maintenance. He was working on a patent to improve the alignment on big transport trucks.
He is survived by a daughter Joyce A. Sockriter of Cambridge, a grandson Thomas Sockriter, Jr. of Cumberland, a brother Kenneth Tyler of Salisbury and a sister Phyllis North of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Tyler is preceded in death by a brother Dr. S. Goldie Tyler, Jr.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE 19966. Family will receive friends from 11 to 12 at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
