David N. Marshall, Sr.

David N. Marshall, Sr., 91 of Cambridge went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday afternoon, July 28, 2026, at his home after a long and fulfilled life. He was born in Hills Point on August 12, 1934, to the late Archie Elston Marshall and Bertha Louise Thomas Marshall. David grew up in the Hills Point and Neck District area and attended local schools, graduating from Cambridge High School in 1952. In 1953, David married the love of his life, the former Shirley Mae McGrath and they remained inseparable for the next 72 plus years.

In 1953 David started a long and dedicated career at John W. Tieder, Inc. Beginning as an electrician apprentice, he retired after more than 44 years as the company’s field supervisor. During the 1950s, David served in the Army National Guard. Locally know for many years as “Big Dave”, he was an avid hunter, fisherman, and waterman. He was a past member of the Cambridge Skeet Club becoming the club champion shooter for multiple years in the 1960s. He was also a past member of the Neck District Fire Company and the Cambridge Yacht Club.

Dave had many hobbies and countless talents and skills. He loved to cook, canned homemade pickles, and make homemade wine. His oyster fritter recipe was a guarded secret for years until it was published in the local cookbook. Always the sports enthusiast, David loved the Orioles and the Ravens, even going back to when they were still the Colts. He loved a good card game and a good party, especially if it was with family and close friends. During the 1970s in the Neck District’s local horseshoe tournament circuit, he was one of the top masters. Always the jokester, Dave was known for his many “tall tales” and was accused by more than one person of “lying if his lips were moving”. He was also known as the local “fix-it” man and always willing to lend a helping hand.

After retirement, David and Shirley enjoyed travelling and collecting antiques with a special interest in rare antique oyster plates. He eventually dedicated a room of their house to this large oyster plate collection, proudly displaying them around the room. For a time, Dave and Shirley also had their own local antique shop and loved to buy, trade, and sell anything old. Most of all Dave was a dedicated family man who enjoyed being with Shirley, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, David is predeceased by a sister Joan M. Wingate, a niece JoAnn Wingate Nabb, and a nephew Stephen E. Wingate.

He is survived by his wife Shirley, sons David Jr. (Scottie), and Tim (Opie), grandchildren Sarah Stevanus (Brian), Chessa Marshall-Cutaiar (Frank), Emmett Marshall (Kate), and Garrett Marshall (Vicky) and great-grandchildren Caroline Stevanus, Charlotte Cutaiar, and Wyatt Marshall.

Pallbearers will be Emmett Marshall, Garrett Marshall, Brian Stevanus, Frank Cutaiar, Marshall Wingate, and Larry Dail.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 11 AM at Spedden Seward Cemetery with Father Tim Kruthaupt officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Neck District Volunteer Fire Co. - 954 Cooks Point Road – Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
