Donald P. Huber

Donald P. Huber, of Nanticoke, Maryland, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, at the age of 89, surrounded by his loving family in his daughter’s home in Farmville, Virginia.

Born on August 26, 1936, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Paul P. and Grace E. (Ruth) Huber. During his early years, he and his parents lived with his grandparents, Clinton and Mabel A. (Woodring) Ruth, helping on the Ruth family dairy farm, where he developed a lifelong and bottomless affection for ice cream and chocolate milk. He often shared stories of hunting and fishing with his grandfather at the Shiny Mountain Rod & Gun Club near Promise Land Lake in the Poconos—memories that shaped his love of the outdoors.

Donald graduated from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and subsequently entered the United States Army, serving proudly both in the U.S. and in Europe during the Cold War. After completing his military service, he began his professional career with Liberty Mutual Insurance in Baltimore, Maryland. He was later transferred to the Eastern Shore, where he continued his work with Liberty Mutual before joining Nationwide Insurance and later Tate Engineering.

Ultimately, Donald fulfilled a lifelong dream when he moved to Nanticoke, Maryland, returning to the farm life he had loved since childhood. On the family farm—affectionately known as Huber’s Hinkle House—the family raised countless flocks of chickens, multiple litters of hogs, and many seasons of truck crops. His children participated enthusiastically, or at least dutifully, in the work that defined their family’s life and shaped their shared stories.

Athletics were a defining part of Donald’s life. He excelled in baseball, wrestling, ice hockey, and tennis. He continued to play competitive tennis in Salisbury for many years, entering numerous local tournaments and served as a linesman at the National Indoor Tennis Championship in the 1970s. He was an avid runner, completing the Marine Corps Marathon several times. He enjoyed skiing, hunting, and fishing with his many close friends, relationships he maintained throughout his life.

Donald also had a lifelong passion for fast cars. While stationed in Germany, he purchased an Austin-Healey and had it shipped home after his service. He spoke often—and with great enthusiasm—about racing his car in Nuremberg.

Music was another constant thread in his life. He mastered the trumpet in high school and continued to play for years in bands and combos in clubs across the U.S. and Europe. In Salisbury, he spent many joyful years singing with a barbershop group and won several competitions with his barbershop quartet. Later in life, he took up the piano, adding yet another instrument to the soundtrack of his days.

Throughout his life, he tied his own flies and chased countless fish in the Poconos, the Nanticoke River, local ponds, and the surf at Assateague Island and Sandbridge, Virginia.

Donald is survived by his three children: Kirsten L. Huber, MD, PhD (Kevin Murphy) of Farmville, VA; Corlie H. Cornell, MA (Thomas) of Maitland, FL; and Clinton P. Huber of Nanticoke, MD. He is also survived by his brother, Robert J. Huber (Stacy) of Osprey, FL; and by his grandchildren, Alexandra J. Cornell, MBA of Charlotte, NC, and Joshua T. Cornell (Madison) of St. Petersburg, FL.

He maintained a lifelong, loving connection with his former wife, Patricia H. Fisher (Ronald).

Interment and a private graveside service will be held at a later date in Schoenersville Cemetery in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
