Ellwood G. Gray III

Ellwood Guy Gray III, 80, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024 at his home surrounded by family.  He was born in Baltimore on September 19, 1943, the son of Ellwood Guy Gray, Jr. and Mildred Jane (Strang) Gray.

He attended Palmyra High School, Palmyra, NJ, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he earned his GED while serving on the USS Oriskany in the Vietnam War. Later he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Hood College, Frederick, MD. His professional career was as a management analyst for the federal government.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Martha, formerly Martha Mulford, whom he married on May 29, 1971, a son, James R. Gray (Randy) of Baltimore, a daughter, Page Gray Whorl and husband Thomas, two granddaughters, Izzy and Hallie of Cambridge, and a sister Pamela Gabrielle Gray of Florida. He is preceded in death by both parents, and a brother Kevin Strang Gray.

Guy loved rescuing big dogs, especially St. Bernards. He enjoyed any woodworking project   and volunteering for Ruark Boatworks.  He enjoyed sailing, anything water or boat related, riding roller coasters, skiing with friends, family, and co-workers, baking and sharing his goodies with those in the community and his church, St. John’s Chapel.   He loved singing with the Chorus of Dorchester.  He loved family vacations to Ocean City, but most of all, he loved his family, being a husband, father, and grandfather.

A celebration of life will be held on May 18 at 11 am at Christ Church, Cambridge with Fr. Dan Dunlap officiating.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in his name to Baywater Animal Rescue, 4930 Bucktown Road, Cambridge, MD, or any animal rescue of your choice. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
