George W. McComas, Jr.

George William McComas, Jr. was born May 11th, 1949 in Washington, D.C. to George and Peggy McComas. His family moved to Cambridge when he was a baby.

His parents had five more children and raised them, they attended public schools in Cambridge, Academy Elementary, Jr. High School and Cambridge Senior High. George graduated in 1967. From there he attended a furnace instillation and cleaning class with Barry Murphy the instructor. George was mentored by Grayson Hurley and encouraged to attend Norman Park Jr. College in Norman George, from there he was admitted to Troy University, Troy Alabama, graduating in 1972 with a BS in business administration. Diplomas were handed out by Gov. George Wallace. While George was walking up the isle he handed his diploma to his mother who was so proud.

George worked at his father’s Esso Gas Station, Rt.50 starting at the age of 8. He loved Dairy Queen’s Orange Slushies right next to the gas station. He worked with his dad at the Amoco Gas Station on Cedar Street and McComas Oil/ Delmarva Oil. Home from College he owned and operated American Heating Service. He also drove delivery trucks for McComas Oil, Pep-Up, Wise Oil and Arco. He also worked for DDUST, retiring in 2018.

George was very involved with the United States Power Squadron for many years, where he earned the 50th Merit Mark. He inspected boats for safety at the boat ramp on Franklin Street. He also taught the youth to build skiffs and put them in the water and paddle them. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church.

George was given his celestial discharge on Thursday, July 23rd at his home at 6 am. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Henry.

He is survived by his brothers Richard (Dinah) of Vicksburg, MS, Leroy (Kaye) of Delmar, DE, Olivia Schunick (Leslie) of Cambridge and Martha Webster (Daniel) of Laurel, DE, nine nieces, eleven nephews, and two great nephews whom he dearly loved.

A special thanks to Tristen Schunick for giving such good care to his great uncle and to Coastal Hospice for their care and compassion.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 8th at 12pm at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with his brother in law Rev. Daniel Webster officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Zion United Methodist Church Endowment Fund or to the Building Fund, 612 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.
