Joan Brannock Grindle of Church Creek, Maryland departed this life on July 8, 2026 at the age of 87 after a short illness. To everyone who knew her, Joan was defined by her family, her faith, and her boundless love for others. Born January 9, 1939 to Vivian and Cleora Willis Brannock, she grew up on the family’s small farm in Church Creek where her love of animals and nature flourished along with her imagination, inspiring a lifelong passion for reading.
A 1957 graduate of Cambridge High School, Joan enjoyed attending class reunion events in recent years. As a young woman, Joan worked at Phillips Packing Company, Rob Roy, Airpax, and Western Publishing. Later, she worked for attorney William D. Gould and at the Dorchester County Treasurer’s Office. For 14 years, her dream job at the Dorchester County Public Library alongside a treasured group of colleagues allowed her to share her love of books with the public. Although she did not attend college, she placed a high value on lifelong learning, and championed the educational aspirations of her children and grandchildren.
In 1960, after a brief meeting and passionate, long-distance courtship, she and Gerald “Jerry” Grindle married. They cherished each day of their nearly 52 years together. In love and in life, their marriage exemplified a true partnership as they raised a family, restored their 19th-century home, and remained at each other’s side through joys and challenges, including Jerry’s long battle with leukemia. In their home, and at Joan’s table, guests always received a warm welcome.
In Joan, strength, resilience, and conviction balanced beautifully with her spirit of generosity, lovingkindness, and forgiveness. A devoted Christian who attended White Haven United Methodist Church and Old Trinity Episcopal Church, her daily devotions included an extensive prayer list naming people she might have only met in passing, as well as family and friends. She focused her attention on the wellbeing of others, and often followed up her prayers with a phone call, a homemade treat, or a gift of fresh vegetables. Beyond hosting innumerable family gatherings and holidays, Joan’s gift for nourishing others extended into the community. In recent years, she primarily gardened not for her own table, but to share her bountiful produce with neighbors and the local food bank.
Joan is survived by her son James Grindle of Church Creek; her daughter Jenifer Dolde, son-in- law Carl Dolde, and grandson Josef Dolde of Earleville, Maryland; and granddaughter Cleora Dolde of Hilo, Hawaii. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Vivian Brannock, and her brother Tyrus Brannock.
A memorial service celebrating Joan’s life will be held on Monday, August 3rd, 2026 at 1 p.m. at Old Trinity Episcopal Church in Church Creek, Maryland. Visitation will take place prior to the service from noon to 1 pm. Interment at Old Trinity will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Maryland Food Bank at mdfoodbank.org. Arrangements are in the care of Thomas Funeral Home, P.A.
