Linda Nitschke Seville, 82, of Julian, Pennsylvania, who along with her husband Calvin owned Whitey’s Restaurant in Arlington, Virginia and was for many years a Department of State career professional with the Agency for International Development (USAID), passed away on December 6, 2025.
Linda was born on February 4, 1943, in Rochester, New York, to Erwin and Betty (Schneider) Nitschke. She grew up in Rochester, where one of her earliest memories was riding with her parents around the city circle on VE Day, listening to the joyful chorus of car horns celebrating the end of the war.
After graduating high school, Linda attended an airline training school in Kansas City. In 1962, she began her career with the U.S. Department of State’s USAID, where she served for three decades before retiring in 1992.
In September 1968, Linda met her future husband, Calvin F. Seville, at a pet store in Arlington, Virginia. She often joked that she went in for a pet and came out with both a pet and Calvin. They married seven months later, in April 1969, and shared 56 years together. The couple lived in Arlington and later Woodbridge, Virginia, before settling in Julian, Pennsylvania, for their semi-retirement. Linda continued to work at Walmart, proudly reaching her 15-year milestone shortly before her passing.
In 1977, Linda and Calvin purchased Whitey’s Restaurant in Arlington, Virginia. Together they transformed it into a beloved local institution, recognized in more than 40 local and national publications as a Washington-area icon. Linda’s quiet, steady presence balanced Calvin’s energy, and together they built a legacy of hospitality and community.
Linda was predeceased by her husband, Calvin; her parents, Erwin and Betty Nitschke; her brother, Glenn Nitschke; her brother-in-law, Michael Seville; and her sister-in-law, Lynne Seville. She is survived by sisters-in-law Elaine Seville and Christine Seville Sherrer; brothers-in-law John Seville Sr. and Stephen Seville; many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews; and countless friends and neighbors who loved and cared for her deeply.
Linda’s gentle strength and unwavering devotion to family made her a cherished sister, aunt, and friend. In joining the Seville family, she became a cornerstone of the clan—someone everyone could count on, and whose presence will be dearly missed.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025 at 11am at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Family will receive friends from 10:30am to 11am. Interment will follow at the East New Market Cemetery.
