Mary Jane (Wingate) Barnes

Mary Jane Barnes, 89, of Cambridge passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at her home with her loving family by her side. She was born in Cambridge on September 28, 1928 and was a daughter of the late Alfred Baldwin Wingate and Marie Dail Wingate.

Mrs. Barnes graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1945. She also graduated from Chesapeake College with honors. Mrs. Barnes continued on to Peninsula General Hospital School of Nursing class of 1968 and received her BSN Degree from University of Maryland. In 1970, she attended Summer School of Alcoholic Studies at Rutgers University. On October 5, 1946, she married Thomas Reed Barnes, Jr., who passed away on July 8, 1990. In 1958, she started working at the Eastern Shore State Hospital, then to Glasgow Nursing Home. Mrs. Barnes also worked at Pleasant Day Adult Day Care Center and Dorchester Community Center in Hurlock where she retired at the age of 80. She enjoyed gardening, going out to visit people and walking around the shore line.

She is survived by three grandsons Stephen Barnes and wife Heidi of Preston, David Barnes and wife Lindsey of Charlottesville, VA and Daniel Barnes of Yorktown, VA, two daughter in laws Barbara Barnes of Cambridge, and Renee Barnes of Yorktown, VA, brother in law Sonny Brown of Easton, sister in law Joan Wingate of Cambridge, and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Barnes is preceded in death by two sons Ronnie Barnes, and Jonathan Barnes, a brother Bill Wingate and her long time companion Vernon Hughes.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Barnes, Tony LeCompte, Brandon Wingate, Steve Wingate, Marshall Wingate, David Barnes and Daniel Barnes.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at 1 pm at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Robert G. Kirkley officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends Wednesday evening 6 to 8. Memorial contributions can be made to Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O.
