Nellie F. (Fountain) Webster

August 25, 1911 — March 30, 2018

Nellie F. Webster was born 106 years ago on August 25, 1911, as Nellie Barber Fountain (Nellie B.), daughter of Hugh Fountain and Nettie (Snow) Fountain.  She was born while William Howard Taft was President of the United States.  She lived through WWI, the Great Depression, WWII, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, and military actions in the Middle East.  During her lifetime she saw many changes: airplanes, telephones, washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioning, central heating, indoor bathrooms, radios, television, cell phones, and the internet, not to mention men walking on the moon and sweeping social and economic changes.

Mrs. Webster was educated in Dorchester County schools, graduating from Seminary High School in 1929.  After graduation she worked as a secretary for Phillips Packing Company before she married James L. Webster.

WWII changed her life.  Her husband was called up with the Maryland National Guard, and so began the moves that would take her to many states and several foreign countries.  She moved to Georgia, Mississippi, and then to Dayton, Ohio, for the rest of the war.  After the war, she lived for three years in Germany, a time that included the Berlin Air Lift.  After Germany, she returned to the United States and lived in Michigan, Alabama, and Indiana before three special years in Japan.  The family was stationed in New York when Colonel Webster's retirement from the United States Air Force brought them home to Cambridge permanently.  She worked for many years in the Robin Hood Shop and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Cambridge.

Mrs. Webster is survived by three daughters, Barbara Carey of Rochester, Minnesota, Janet Asplen (and husband Wayne) of Cambridge, and Bonnie Forgacs of Cambridge.  She is survived by five grandchildren, Kevin Asplen, Nancy Old, Nell Forgacs, Lauren Forgacs, and Katherine Forgacs, and four great-grandchildren, Joseph Carey, Marinda Carey, Emily Old, and Sadie Giessner.  She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, sisters, husband, and eldest grandson, James Carey.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Asplen, Kevin Asplen, David Webster, Joseph Carey, Joe Giessner, Andy Engle, and Chuck Wheatley.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 1 pm at the First Baptist Church in Cambridge with Pastor Steve Trice officiating. Interment will follow at East New Market Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial gifts be sent to the First Baptist Church of Cambridge, Maryland. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
