Odessa M. Shorter

October 11, 1919 — October 4, 2008

Odessa M. Shorter, 88 of Elliott, passed away on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at the Delaware Hospice in Milford. She was born at Bishops Head on October 11, 1919, and was a daughter of the late Granville and Elsie Gray Woodland.

She attended schools at Elliott. On December 19, 1936 she was married to Leonard W. Shorter. Mr. Shorter passed away on September 17, 1997. Mrs. Shorter worked as a seafood worker for most of her life, and was a member of Elliott United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting and spending time with her grand children and great grandchildren. Mrs. Shorter had been in failing health for the past three years when she passed away on Saturday evening.

Survivors include a daughter Patricia A. McGlaughlin and her companion Ben Farren of Laurel, Delaware, one son Marvin L. Shorter and his wife Wanda Shorter of Seaford, six grandchildren Susan Joseph, Jill Cummings, Stephanie Smith, Michael Shorter, Jessica Macdonald and Emily Williams, twelve great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister Alma Troyer of Wilmington, DE and one brother Granville R. Woodland of Seaford and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a sister Jeanette Reid and two brothers James Woodland and Archie Woodland.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Elliott United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kim Gilson officiating. Interment will follow in the adjoining churchyard. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Pallbearers will be Billy Joseph, Ronnie Cummings, Dan Smith, Michael Shorter, Colin Macdonald and David Williams.
