Philip W. Rice

Philip W. Rice, 80, of Cambridge passed away on Monday, April 7, 2025 at Heartfields Assisted Living in Easton. He was born in Baltimore on July 8, 1944 and was the son of the late Philip Purchase and Talitha Lamp Rice. Mr. Rice lost both of his parents by the age of 12. He was raised by a special aunt and uncle, the late Vivian and Thomas Cage, affectionately known as Na Na and Pop Pop Tom to Phil’s daughters.

He graduated in 1962 from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and went to Salisbury State College, now Salisbury University, where he graduated in 1966. On July 31, 1965, he married the former Donna Hubbard. Mr. Rice taught at Cambridge High School where he coached baseball and football. He also worked for John W. Tieder, Granville Hooper, and Provident State Bank, where he retired. After retiring, he worked at Craig's Drug Store. Mr. Rice served as Councilman for the City of Cambridge for 12 years, where he was past president, and served several years on the Planning and Zoning Commission. In his younger days, Mr. Rice enjoyed playing softball and wood working. He was an avid crossword puzzle solver, and enjoyed spending time in the kitchen, cooking and baking for his family. He was a member of Grace Methodist Church, served on the Dorchester County Board of Education, and was a past member of the Cambridge Elks #1272 where he served as Exalted Ruler. He was also a faithful volunteer at the annual Seafood Feast-I-Val.

He is survived by his wife Donna Rice of Cambridge, two daughters Holly Spicer (Jason) of Church Creek, and Casey Scott (Jason) of Trappe, three grandchildren Sophie, Sloane and Brady, and a special nephew Billy Hubbard. Besides his parents, Mr. Rice is preceded in death by his beloved sister, Phyllis Ann Rice.

Pallbearers will be Billy Hubbard, Doug Scott, Lin Spicer, Nick Manzione, Chuck Kelly and Randall Banks. Honorary pallbearer will be Scot Marshall.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2025 at 11am at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Steve Bloodsworth officiating. Interment will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Talbot Hospice House, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.
