Richard Earl Gauen, 90, of East New Market passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024 peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Richard was the son of the late Kenneth R. and Cleo Martin Gauen. In addition to Richard’s parents he is preceded in death by his great-great granddaughter Gracyn White.


Richard served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1957 where he was stationed with his wife in Anchorage, Alaska. Once they came back home they lived near East New Market. When Richard come home from the Air Force, he went to work at Contennial Can Company which later became Crown Cork and Seal with over 40 years of service. He loved building things out of wood including making toy boxes for each of his grandchildren. He was a member for 54 years with the American Legion Post 243 in Hurlock and a 28 year member of the Cambridge Moose Lodge.

 

He is survived by his wife of 70 years of marriage Patricia Smith Gauen, a son Kenneth Gauen (Dara) and a daughter Bonnie Jo Powell (Kenny), grandchildren Crystal Gauen Biel (Scott), Kenneth Powell, Jr. (Katie), Courtney Hults (Eddie), Karen Silbereisen, Andrew Silbereisen (Sarah), great grandchildren Kenneth Powell III, Sasha Biel, Duke Biel, MacKenzie Powell, Alex Andrews, Emmett Hults, Alex Fuller, Kayley Fuller, Austin Silbereisen and Dylan White. Richard is also survived by a brother Barry Gauen (Kathy), a special niece Debbie Beers (Steve) and many nieces and nephews.

 

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024 a 3pm at Thomas Funeral Home with Mr. David Tolley officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Hurlock American Legion Post 243, P.O. Box 7, Hurlock, MD 21643.
