Roy Henry Hurst, Jr. passed away peacefully on Monday, November 3, 2025 in Chantilly, VA at the age of 89. He was born on May 2, 1936 in Secretary and was the son of the late Roy Henry Hurst, Sr. and Myra Eliza Coulbourn Hurst.
Roy Hurst, Jr., graduated from East New Market High School on June 1, 1954 and from the University of Maryland in College Park with a BS in Business and Public administration on January 27, 1960.
He served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962 and stationed in Fort Knox, KY. On August 12,1961, he married the former Nancy Porter who passed away on April 21, 2001. After getting married in 1961, he lived briefly in Detroit, MI before eventually returning east to be closer to family. He later moved to Dunkirk, MD.
He worked as a professional photographer and ran his own business, Hurst Photography in Lanham, MD for nearly40 years. He specialized in dance and school photography, but also took studio portraits, wedding photos and portfolio pictures for musical artists.
He had many hobbies and interests, including skeet shooting, bowling, rebuilding machinery and gardening. He also enjoyed going to local auctions, such as Dixon’s Auction in Crumpton, MD and Foxwell’s Antiques and Collectibles in Easton, MD.
He is survived by three daughters Linda Alan Hurst Fowler (Michael), Denise Lynn Hurst and Marianne Delinda Hurst Lee (James), two grandchildren Matthew and Melissa Fowler, a nephew Russ Stevens and a niece Wanda Perkins.
Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Hurst is preceded in death by a sister Catherine “Kitty” Hurst Stevens.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at 2pm at the East New Market Cemetery, Route 16, East New Market, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the charity of your choice or to your local hospice. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
