Russell “Rusty” P. Smith III of Cambridge passed away on Monday, September 29, 2025 at Deer’s Head Hospital Center. He was born on June 12, 1944 in Macon, Georgia to the late Dr. Russell P. Smith, Jr and Betty LeCompte Smith. He was proceeded in death by his brother, Barry L. Smith.
Rusty graduated from Cambridge High School and received his Bachelors degree from the University of Maryland College Park. He later received a Master’s degree from Central Michigan University.
After graduating from the University of Maryland, he joined the U.S. Army. During his service, he was assigned overseas in Vietnam and South Korea. His awards were many including Combat Infantry Honor Badge and Bronze Star. He later left the army as a Major.
After leaving the military, Rusty returned to Cambridge where he worked for the State of Maryland in a variety of human resources offices throughout Maryland. After retiring, he worked as a court commissioner through the District Court of Maryland.
Rusty also enjoyed officiating sports throughout his life. He was the Chief Umpire for Little League, member of the Bayside Umpire Association, member of Bayside Football Official Association, member of Bayside Football Officials Association and Bayside Lacrosse Officials Association. He was a charter member of the Eastern Shore Umpires Association.
He is survived by his wife Eva Carol Smith, his children Kimberly Waller (Ken) of Hebron, Russell Smith IV (Bethany) of Easton; grandchildren Alexandra Waller, Aiden Smith and Austin Smith.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2025 at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. at 11 AM with Rev. Steve Bloodsworth officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude.
