Stanley "Uncle Stan" Kowalsky, aged 102, of Cambridge, MD, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2024. Born in New Egypt, NJ, on September 18, 1921, Stan’s entrepreneurial spirit shaped a remarkable business career.
As a schoolboy he helped as the janitor’s assistant, where he swept the rooms before school started. In his late teens, Stan ran a pony ride at Clementon Park Fairground, which funded his first business ventures. This experience helped him along the path to establish Superior Carriers in Kenvil, NJ, with his brothers (Joe, Leon, Mike). The company flourished, expanding to a fleet of over 100 trucks and becoming a significant player in the transportation of food oils and concrete pipes across the Eastern seaboard.
After selling the trucking business, Stan and his brothers embarked on a new venture, building and operating the successful Battleground Country Club near Freehold, NJ, until his retirement in 1984. Retirement brought him to Cambridge, MD, where he enjoyed his golden years with his beloved wife, Lorena, until her passing in 2002. He was an active member of the Dorchester Ruritan Club for many years.
Stan was an avid outdoorsman, relishing time spent at his cabin in Canada for bass fishing and traveling to Nova Scotia for trout fishing. He spent many hours in his garden and had a deep appreciation for sulky horse racing.
Predeceased by his wife, Lorena, Stan leaves behind a legacy of his many stories and jokes. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, and a much loved brother-in-law.
A celebration of Stan's life will be held on May 21, 2024, at 3 pm at Thomas Funeral Home, 700 Locust St, Cambridge, MD 21613. He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by all who knew him.
