Vernon L. Hurley, 68, of Cambridge passed away suddenly on Friday, August 11, 2023 at his home. He was born in Cambridge on June 2, 1955 and as a son of the late William Luther Hurley, Jr. and Sallie Virginia Coleman Hurley.
He graduated from Cambridge High School class of 1973. On October 19, 1974, he married the former Teresa Sellers. Vernon worked as a dispatcher for the City of Cambridge, a Dorchester County Sheriff Deputy, 911 Director for Dorchester County, EMS instructor and an instructor for MIMSS and MFRI. Vernon was very proud of being a part of the first EMT class in Dorchester County. He was very active in Rescue Fire Company, Church Creek Volunteer Fire Company and Dorchester EMS. In 1995, he received the Maryland Star of Life which was the highest award for EMS providers. He enjoyed photography, traveling especially to Lancaster and being involved in the Boy Scouts.
He is survived by his wife Teresa Hurley, a daughter Christina Brault and husband Robert, two grandchildren Rebecca and Matthew, a sister Sharon Shorter and husband Luther, and three nephews Jason Shorter, Jenson Shorter, Thomas Hurley and their families. Besides his parents, Mr. Hurley is preceded in death by a brother W. Howard Hurley, a sister Virginia Ruth Hurley.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 2pm at Church Creek Volunteer Fire Company with Rev. Christina Blake officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Church Creek Volunteer Fire Company, P.O.
