Wayne N. Saunders, 80, of Secretary passed away on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at his home in East New Market.
He was born on July 13, 1941 in Cambridge and was the son of the late W. Norris Saunders and Louise V. Willey Saunders.
Mr. Saunders graduated from North Dorchester High School, where he also was active in sports, lettering in baseball, basketball and football. Later, he attended Ceil Community and Harford Junior Colleges.
Upon graduation, Mr. Saunders enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as a military police officer. During his tenure, he was a member of his company’s boxing team and basketball team. After completing his service obligation, he returned to Dorchester County where he was employed by the Cambridge Wire Cloth Company.
In January of 1964, Mr. Saunders began a career with the Department of Maryland State Police, retiring in 2000 with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He held a variety of supervisory positions. He served as the commander at five different State Police Barracks and rounded out his law enforcement tenure as the Eastern Region Commander for the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division.
During his employment with the Maryland State Police, he was elected State President of the Fraternal Order of Police in 1978 and State President of the Maryland Troopers Association in 1979.
He enjoyed watching sports, doing yard work, having coffee with his friends and most importantly being in the company of his family.
He survived by his wife Norma Lee, five sons, Richard A. Saunders, Mark W. Saunders and his wife Jennifer of Elkton, Michael A. Saunders of Elkton, Matthew C. Saunders of Elkton and Joe Saunders of Churchton, four grandchildren Courtney, Carter, Trent and Mason Saunders, two great grandchildren Jaax, and Slade and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his sister Bonnie Peters. In addition to his parents, Mr. Saunders is preceded in death by his former wife Ann Sposata of Elkton.
A private service for the family will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
