C. Webster Johnson

Charles Webster Johnson, age 98, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Heartfields in Easton.

He was born in Bishops Head in 1916, the son of the late Charles Goldsborough and Lena Ruark Johnson. He attended Maryland public schools and at an early age moved to Cambridge where he was employed by the Phillips Packing Company.

On January 14, 1941 he was with the first group of draftees to leave Dorchester County. During World War II he served with the 15th Engineers, 9th Infantry Division and in the European Theatre of War. He was with the invasion of North Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium, Germany and met the Russians at the Elbe River. On June 27, 1945 he was honorably discharged and received 8 battle stars in addition to other medals.

In 1946 he married the former Kathryn Savage who passed away on April 18, 2009 and they made their home at the “Christmas Inn” in Cambridge.  Webb and Kathryn were well known for singing together at many functions throughout the area.

He was employed at the Eastern Shore Hospital Center for over 30 years and retired in 1975.

He was a faithful supporter of the Cambridge Wesleyan Church and a member of the American Legion Post 91 and was an avid clock collector.

He is survived by two brother-in-laws, Reid Morris and Kenneth Hoffman both of Delaware, several nieces, nephews and great nieces, great nephews, special caregiver, Cindy Higgins and Ward and special friends, Planner and Esther Windsor.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents and wife, are brother and sisters, Brice Johnson, Sophia Mills, Retta Johnson, Monroe Johnson, McCullough Johnson, Doris Marshall, Lelia Wingate, Allen Johnson, Frederick Whitey Johnson, Magdalene Mills, and half sister Margaret Parks.

Pallbearers will be Planner Windsor, Ward Higgins II, Billy Robinson, Buddy Hoffman, Joe Brooks and Bobby Aaron.  Honorary pallbearers will be Herb Robinson, William Harper Sr., Bill Savage, Jr., Scott Robinson, and Brenda Gubinsky.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 27, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Cambridge Wesleyan Church with Rev. Paul D. Dieter officiating.  Viewing will be held Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at the Dorchester Memorial Park.
