John "Big John" Leroy Stubbs

John Leroy Stubbs, better known as Big John, passed away on June 12, 2021 with his daughter by his side. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 17, 1947 to the late Roy and Esther Stubbs.

Big John graduated from Lindenhurst High School in Lindenhurst, NY.  Upon graduation, he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned several accolades for his service.  While in the military, he worked as a mechanic and as a helicopter Crew Chief.  Upon earning his honorable discharge, Big John bought his first car, a Chevy Nova Box, which fueled his love for racing. He worked for some time with Ames 83 in Curtis Bay.  On May 11, 1985, he married Laura Stubbs.   Upon retirement, Big John fell in love with online shopping, Facebook, and cooking, which he combined in his page called “Big John’s Recipes” on Facebook, which he was so very proud of.  He also loved the water, animals, and tinkering on projects at all times.  Big John will always be remembered as a gentle giant.  He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Severn, MD.

Big John is survived by his wife Laura Stubbs of Severn, MD; his children Laura Stubbs and husband Michael Stafford of Cambridge, Valerie Ann Stubbs of Springfield, MA, and Peter Thomas Stubbs and wife Kim of Indiana; grandchildren Tiffany Bush, Anthony Cedrick Bush, Jr., Tavon Bush, Rashad Mann, Leah Bush, Dylan Andrew Stubbs, Stephen Andrew Nellenback, Jr, Jonathan Boyle, and Stephanie Lynn Boyle; as well as numerous cousins.  Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister Judy Conroy, a brother, and a granddaughter Andrea Clarice Bush.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 21, 2021 at 12:30 PM at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A with Mr. David Tolley officiating.  A visitation will be held one hour prior.  Burial will follow at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery.
