Virginia Handley (Handley) Matthews

November 10, 1922 — January 8, 2017

Longtime Cambridge resident, Virginia Lee Matthews, Ginnie, to her family and friends, passed away at Bayleigh Chase in Easton, Md. peacefully on January 8, 2017. She was 94.

Ginnie was born on November 10, 1922. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Sterling Handley and Mary Lewis Handley. She was preceded in death by a brother and her beloved husband, Sewell Ross Matthews and infant great-granddaughter Isabella Matthews.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jo German of North Palm Beach, FL, and sons Sewell Ross Matthews, Jr. (Susan) of Cambridge and Terry Lewis Matthews (Jane) of Lutherville, Md. Grandson Joshua. Two grandchildren are Jason Matthews (Karla) and Caroline Matthews Hudson (John), four great grandchildren, Mia and Leo Matthews and Blair and Kendall Hudson. Also, family members Kenny Kreiser (Angela) and great grandchildren are Ellie, Lola and Ruby.

Ginnie was the matriarch of her family that she loved dearly. She was raised on Pioneer Point Farm and graduated from The Centreville, MD High School and then attended Mary Washington College. Also attended the University of Maryland. For a number of years, she worked for Dr. Walter Gunby in Cambridge.

She became a LPN graduating the highest in her class from Cambridge Hospital. She later worked and retired from the Eastern Shore Hospital Center in Cambridge. She also worked in her husband’s real estate brokerage business. After retirement she tutored adults to read. More than anything, she loved and enjoyed all family activities. Her other interests were sewing, sailing at the Cambridge Yacht Club and golfing at the Cambridge Country Club and playing bridge in various bridge groups.

She also enjoyed being in Florida during the winter months and playing golf. She will be dearly missed by family and her many friends including Beverly Mullikin a loving and faithful friend, Sharon Wongus, a loyal friend of over 40 years and special neighbors Dean Flowers, Jane Flowers and Ann Bradford.

Ginnie was a long time parishioner of Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge having been married there on December 6, 1947.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 11 am at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. William Davis officiating. Interment will be private at the Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
